The first usable electric tram system was made in 1888 in Richmond, VA. It became the blueprint for subway systems around the world.
By 1907 the electric train had 118 miles of track in Richmond, connecting neighborhoods and neighboring cities. What those routes would look like today can be seen in the map below.
Service ran for almost 62 years, ending in 1949.
In 2022 the proposed budget for Richmond includes no provisions for electric vehicles or renewable energy infrastructure.
